Local RO employees help out at Mudlarks Community Garden in Hertford

Employees from the RO Group in Potters Bar have been helping out at Mudlarks Community Garden to support the Hertford based charity with its efforts to look after vulnerable members of the local community.

Mudlarks supports adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues offering therapy, training and work experience in horticulture, conservation and environmental awareness. With the help of their dedicated volunteers and staff they have created a valuable community resource where people work together to learn new skills, gain self-confidence and create a sustainable and productive environment.

The RO is an entrepreneurial family company which has been in business for more than 85 years and has strong roots in Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties. Around 20 employees, along with the RO Chairman and Group Managing Director gave up a working day to the allotment project providing support by weeding existing plots, creating a new flower garden and painting the onsite hut.

Mudlarks Leader, Vic Hobson, said:

"I would like to thank the RO and their lovely staff for all the hard work that they put into their day at Mudlarks. Due to the nature of the work that we do with our gardeners, much of which is therapeutic, the larger scale tasks such as digging over plots can be hard for us to manage, and climbing tall ladders is particularly challenging! We tend to be working on smaller scale, individual tasks, and often the larger jobs become a bit overwhelming. To have such an enthusiastic and able group of people was fabulous and achieved so much in one day that would otherwise have taken us weeks to complete. Treating and painting all the sheds is a job that has been long overdue, and has given them increased longevity as well as saving us money in repairs or even replacement. And the digging over of the flower garden was tremendous. Everyone has commented on how lovely it looks. After your start, we have now built the raised beds and planted them up with flowers, a job that all of our gardeners have been able to enjoy.

The RO Group also generously funded a new wheelchair path, which is now in place, and along with all their hard work, have made a substantial difference to Mudlarks and the people we support."

Richard Rowlandson OBE, Chairman of the RO commented:

"We have been extremely impressed by the tremendous work that Mudlarks undertakes in supporting local people with learning difficulties and mental health issues. When we first visited them, we immediately looked at practical ways we could help. Giving a day of our time was a great experience, hard work and fun, and we are delighted to have supported this tremendous charity, who provide a very important service to their local community. We look forward to working with Mudlarks again in the future."
